Posted on 14:57 by Unknown
Getting hired in the fire service as a paid firefighter is not the easiest task however, by following a few simple rules of thumb anybody with the mental drive can succeed and eventually go on to a long, safe career in the fire service. There are so many careers available, why the fire service? Well the fire service has been utilized by communities since the beginning on time. When there is any kind of emergency, the fire service and its personnel has always been there to help. Everyone is born into this world and most of do not know what we want to do career wise but, there are a few people across the American nation that feel that we were born part of this great career. Although we have a passion for saving lives, no fire department is just going to let you walk on and let you start working on driving a twenty thousand pound fire engine or allow you to throw a ladder against a burning building to save a child and its favorite stuffed animal from the burning building. This career keeps its high reputation by hiring quality people that have expertise in their field. If you are just getting out of high school and are over the age of 18, you are eligible to take different tests for fire departments all over the country. This career allows applications from men and women over the age of 18 to take a written exam which will allow them to, if they pass, get an oral interview with that department. The fire service has smaller fire departments that require the applicant to have different certifications and degrees to apply.
Larger fire service departments that are hiring have minimum requirements but, the fire departmentsthat are slightly smaller generally require you to obtain a state certified fire academy and degree from a college or paramedic license. These certifications will allow you to apply to more fire service departments than if you didn’t have them. These qualifications make you more attractive to get hired because that means the hiring fire department won’t have to teach you certain things which will save them money. Applying to a volunteer fire department is a great way to get fire related experience which is one of the three key areas that hiring fire departments are looking for. Quality skills and certifications can greatly increase your chances of getting hired in the fire service. Although most television shows and movies show firefighters saving lives and pulling babies out of burning buildings, the truth is most of the work a firefighter does is not as glorified and it’s the small things that the fire departments do that make the fire service such a great service career. Men and women trying to get hired should be going to a school that offers a fire technology degree and fire academy that will show them the basics and the lifestyle that working firefighters are exposed to on a daily basis.

Fire Recruitment
Posted on 15:01 by Unknown
Fire recruitment has many different angles and techniques that firefighters are required to display when searching for a job in the fire service. There are so many applicants out there, what makes you more appealing to a fire department than the others? This question is the main subject when it comes to fire recruitment. Hiring fire departments have thousands of applicants who are trying to get hired but, there are only a few spots available, who do they choose? Fire recruitment is a harsh way for the fire service to turn over every rock in someone’s life even if they want to leave it unturned. Fire departments hiring new rookies are always looking for someone who can spark their interest and who will become a firefighter that everyone wants to become. Fire captains and recruits often live different types of life styles; this is why the fire recruitment process is so intense. Applicants start by taking a written fire exam that has a hundred to two hundred questions ranging from mechanical advantage to medical terminology and mathematics. Firefighters that have been hired always suggest that the recruits research the fire departments history and community numbers and hazards when applying to show your passion and attention to detail. Fire recruitment is based off three main subjects including your personality, fire related experience and your education.
A firefighter personality is usually a type A personality that is dominant and can be a great leader. Fire recruiters are always looking for natural born leaders that will be able to control an emergency scene even when things start to get hectic. Fire recruitment captains and the human resources department also look at what fire related experience you may or may not have. This can include but is not limited to working as a volunteer firefighter, working on an ambulance as an attendant or driver or even volunteering at a fire school doing paperwork. Fire recruitment can also be attributed to an applicant’s education. The fireservice is a service career that not only requires brute strength but, it also requires delicate mental strength because the firefighters deal with extreme circumstances every shift they are on duty. Fire recruitment does not stop there, for before the recruit is fully hired a background investigation is completed. A fire recruitment background investigation requires the applicant to be very honest about their past and their intentions once they get hired. Firefighters are the only ones who will be running towards the burning building instead of away from it because they are able to rely on their extreme training and skills that are continually practiced on and off of their working shifts. The fire recruitment process is something that can be very different than most any other career but the end result of getting hired onto your dream fire department is worth it. Applicants should always keep going and applying to different fire departments around the nation because the fire recruitment process is sometimes just being at the right place at the right time.
Fire Academy
Posted on 12:46 by Unknown
Each fire academy is going to be set up differently across the nation. One school may challenge recruits more than others but, all California state certified fire schools have a set amount of hours and subjects that are required to be covered throughout the fire academy in order for the state of California to issue a state certified fire school certification. A fire department school may provide technical as well as different manipulative training on many of the basic concepts of radio communications, self contained breathing apparatus which is also known as a SCBA, different tools including an axe as well as gas powered machines like a saw. A firefighter may be required to throw up a ladder to go save and rescue a victim in a house or building. This type of skill is taught at fire school and the instructors are able to have one on one time with recruits on the proper techniques and safety precautions that need to be taken in to consideration. Preparation is a key factor when applying for jobs in the fire service. A fire academy will enable applicants to be able to apply to more fire departments that are hiring. The academy will also show the recruit how much team work is used in the fire service.
Each participant will be selected into a smaller group to work in a team in which they will stay with from start to finish of the school academy. Each recruit is responsible for their own work but it is also expected for them to help the other candidates complete their respective duties. The fire academy duties may include cleaning of the fire academy grounds as well as cleaning the burn tower after the class has trained for the day. Each fire academy offers instructors that have worked or are currently working in the fire service and are able to provide the recruits with great insight on the different ways to get hired onto a fire department. A fire academy is usually done through a college in which the fire academy recruits will receive units toward their college credit and graduation. Each fire academy can be paced differently depending on if it is a full-time or part-time fire academy. A full time fire academy will require each recruit to attend the classes Monday through Friday. The part time classes will only be held on the weekend but will take more months to complete the full firefighter schoolacademy because there is a set amount of hours each recruit must complete to fulfill the California standards. Getting hired in the fire service can be complicated but with the right education and passion, anyone with a strong mind can complete a fire academy despite any set backs. The fire service hires well educated people as well as well rounded individuals because firefighters live in barracks with others and must be able to work well with their team because the lives of their crew and themselves rely on their ability to communicate well with others.
