Firefighters are known in history as firemen. These hard workers were personnel that are thoroughly trained in extinguishing structure fires that may terrorize innocent people or property or the environment. Firefighters are trained to rescue civilians in critical situations that they may need help from firefighters to protect them from a structure fire, wild land fire or even a medical emergency. There are paid firefighters all over the nation that protect and serve the community that put their lives on the line to help their citizens with everyday duties like going to the store or helping a little old lady across the street. The paid firefighters have many benefits that enable them to live a stable life with a steady income. This is why firefighters have one of the most sought after careers in the United States of America and all over the world. The benefits that are available to American firefighters may be different than firefighters overseas.

The fire service is comprised of paid and volunteer firefighters. The volunteer workers often work part-time and generally have another career in which they get paid for. They volunteer as firefighters to help their community flourish. These firefighters have developed their skills from years of experience. These firefighters are the core of the fire service. Most men and women trying to get hired in the fire service first start in a volunteer fire department. Volunteer workers complete all of the same duties that a paid firefighter would.
